Installation and Maintenance
Woodstoves are becomeing increasingly popular in rural areas where the only alternative is Propane, Oil and Electric Heat.- Installing a wood stove in your home must be undertaken properly to ensure a safe installation.
- Install a stove in accordance with required clearances from any combustible surfaces, including floors, walls or furniture.
- Any chimney must have adequate capacity, the correct height, proper location, proper clearance from combustibles and proper mechanical support to be safe. Follow manufactures installation instructions.
- When an EPA airtight stove is selected and installed with a proper chimney, the efficiency and safety of the stove operation is totally in control of home owner.
- The type and moisture content of wood well also affect stove operation.
- A wood stove requires regular maintenance: proper cleaning of the chimney to remove creosote deposits, regular inspection of the installation, and handling of ashes.
- Most insurance companies will require a WETT Certified Inspector to inspect installation prior to issuing an insurance policy.
Wood Stove Maintenance
Do not burn driftwood, trash, treated wood, artificial logs, or any product containing zinc, sulfur, lead, or plastics as they will damage the catalytic combustor. Burning trash in a wood stove is dangerous for its potential to start a chimney fire, and also because the trash could contain plastics or other elements which emit harmful gases.
It is recommended to have wood stoves and chimneys inspected at least once each year by a professional WETT Inspector or a Certified chimney sweep. They should check for all signs of deterioration such as cracks, leaks, warping, baffle gaps, and creosote in the chimney. Chimney fires can be extremely devastating; getting regular inspections is a good way to reduce the risk of chimney fires and identify any existing problems. It is a good idea to get your wood stove and chimney inspected before the heating season begins so your stove will be in safe working order for the winter months ahead.
